1. Компиляция Дункана Гринлиса из текстов на различных языках (включая арамейский, уйгурский, китайский, латинский, греческий и т.п.), имеет своей целью собрать известные манихейские тексты в виде единого доктринального сборника.

2. Обширные предисловия и комментарии товарища Гринлиса (теософского характера) я пропускаю, чтобы не нарушать его копирайта, перевожу только текст мара Мани, автор умер 1800 лет назад и никогда не собирался получать денег за свое творчество.

3. Чтобы не говорили, что я что-то добавляю, даю английский оригинал, по которому заодно можно меня и поправить, так как все же язык мне не родной, могу и глючить.

4. Если длительно не комментируется, могу прервать перевод, так как это есть смысл делать, если кому-то это в русскоязычной среде интересно, сам я манихей скорее англоязычный.

Chapter 1. The Two Sources

There are two Sources unborn and everlasting, God and Matter, Light and Darkness, Good and Evil – in all ways quite opposite, for the one shares nothing with the other, God being good and having nothing in common with Evil. For while the Light is a good Tree full of good fruits, Matter is an evil Tree bearing fruits consistent with the root. Now the fruits of that evil root are fornications, adulteries, murders, avarice and all evil deeds, which God has not planned. It is as when two Kings are fighting against each other, being enemies from the first, and having each his own property.

Now the Good Source dwelt in the Region of Light, and He was named the ‘Father of Greatness’, and His Five Glories were dwelling with Him: Mind, Knowledge, Reason, Memory, Will; and there is no limit to the Light from above, nor to the right or left. And lined up with God there are other Powers, just like handmaids, all good: the Bright and the Light and the Above – all these are with God.

But the Evil Source, named the ‘King of Darkness’, he was dwelling in his Dark Earth, in its five worlds: Smoke and Fire and Hot Wind and Danger-Water and Gloom; nor is there limit to the Darkness from below, either to right or to left. And with Matter are the Dim and the Dark and the Below and other like them, all evil.

Свет - доброе дерево, полное добрых плодов, а тьма - злое дерево, которое приносит плоды по корням его. А плоды этого злого корня - это блядство, разврат, убийство, жадность и все прочие злые дела, которых Бог никогда не собирался делать. Это напоминает, как если бы два царя воевали друг с другом, будучи врагами от начала, и каждый имеет свое собственное имущество.

И добрый источник живет в области света, и называется “Отец Величия”, и пять его доблестей живут вместе с ним: Разум, Знание, Интеллект, Память, Воля; и нет там ограничения свету ни сверху, ни справа, ни слева. И выстроились с Богом другие силы, как служанки, все добрые: блистание, и свет, и высота - и все они с Богом.

Но злой источник, который называется “Царь тьмы”, живет на темной земле, в его пяти мирах: дым и огонь и горячий ветер и страшная вода и мрак; нет там ограничения тьме ни снизу, ни справа, ни слева. И с материей - сумерки, и тьма, и низость, и все им подобное, все это злое.

Chapter 2. Darkness Invades the Light-Realm

Now after many ages Matter was divided against itself, and its fruits against each other; Matter became disorderly, and it produced and increased and kept emanating many Powers. So then, having increased, it pushed on, not knowing the existence of the Good; and when the War had begun, and some were chasing while others were being chased, as it rose up more and more, it saw both the earth and the light of the Good; in the course of the conflict the Darkness passed beyond its own boundaries.

So after each of them had come to know the other, and the Darkness had begun to contemplate the Light, having as it were acquired a passion for the better thing, it pressed on to mingle with it, in order to attain to what was not its own, and even desired to occupy this Source, dispossessing God. Moving irregularly, for such is according to its nature, Matter came to God’s own place, or to Light and Brightness and all such things, and resolved to proceed, as it were, to a certain haste, taking this as a proof of familiarity with the Light.

Therefore Matter rushed on, with the demons and the phantoms, and the fire and the water, against the Light that had appeared. Then having gazed at the Light, they began to enjoy it and to wonder at it, and to resolve on warring against and seizing it without delay, and on blending their own darkness with the Light.

When the King of Darkness had decided to go up to the Region of Light, then the Five Glories trembled, and God was alarmed at the mass charge; for He had no fire to strike with bolts and lightnings, nor water to cause a flood, nor iron, nor any other weapon that can be devised. So then He determined to avenge Himself upon this Matter although lacking evil to punish it with, for there is no evil in God’s House.

И вот после многих веков материя разделилась против самой себя, и ее плоды друг против друга; материя стала неорганизованной и произвела и увеличила, и испустила многие силы. И после того, как увеличилась, она напряглась, не зная о существовании добра; и тогда началась война, и многие преследовали, в то время как других преследовали, пока она поднималась выше и выше, и она увидела землю и свет добра; и во время сражения тьма выступила из своих границ.

И после того, как каждый из них узнал друг друга, и тьма начала рассматривать свет, как будто захотела чего-то лучшего, и начала смешиваться с ним, чтобы получить то, что ей не принадлежало, и хотела даже занять его источник и забрать его у Бога. Беспорядочно двигаясь, так как такое движение соответствует ее природе, материя дошла до того места, где был сам Бог со светом и сиянием и всем таким же, и решила продолжать делать то же самое, в некоторой спешке, считая тот факт, что она достигла этого места, доказательством своего знакомства со светом.

Итак, материя набросилась, с демонами и фантомами, и огнем, и водой, на свет, который появился. И наблюдая свет, они начали наслаждаться им и удивляться ему, и продолжали воевать против него и немедленно его хватать, и перемешивать свою собственную темноту со светом.

Когда царь тьмы решил подняться к царству света, тогда пять доблестей задрожали, и Бог был предупрежден о наступлении; ведь Он не имел ни огня, чтобы сражаться со стрелами и молниями, ни воды чтобы устроить потоп, ни железа, ни какого-то другого оружия, которое может быть придумано. Chapter 3. Soul Enters Matter

Then the Father of Greatness considered and said: “From these five worlds of Mine I will not send the Five Glories (even one) of them to the War, because they were created by Me for rest and peace, but I Myself will go out and see to this revolt”. He devised the plan against Matter just because it had desired the Good, to send on that account towards Matter a certain Power which is called the Soul, which should wholly permeate it. Now the Soul in men is a part of the Light, while the Body is of Darkness and Matter’s handiwork; and there are these names of the Soul: Mind, Thought, Intention, Consideration, Reason.

So that there might be no more evil for it but all things good, having taken a certain portion of the Light, He sent it out as a sort of bait and fishhook for Matter – a Power of the Good, not yet sensible Light but an emanation of God. First, the Father of Greatness called forth the Mother of Life, and then the Mother of Life evoked the First Man; then the First Man called forth his five Sons, like a man who puts on armor for war. Before him went out an Angel called Nahashbet, holding a crown of victory in his hand – so the First Man spread the Light in front of him. Then when the King of Darkness saw it, he considered and said, “What I was seeking from afar I have found near by”! For Matter, having gazed at the Power sent forth, longed for it like a sweet-heart, was infatuated with the Power seen as if altogether forgetful of its own nature. Meanwhile Evil was still advancing and straining itself and coming nearer to the Light, and that was laid open and spread out beyond it.

The First Man gave himself and his Five Sons in the five Elements as food for the five Sons of Darkness, just as a man who has an enemy mixes deadly poison in a cake and gives it to him. Then, warring on him in return, the Rulers of Darkness charged up, snatched from the Light, swallowed what had been sent, devoured from his panoply what was the Soul and distributed it to their own Powers. When they had eaten these, the intelligence of the five Bright Gods was taken from them, and they were like the man bitten by a mad dog or a snake, because of the venom of the Sons of Darkness.

So in this way was the Soul mixed with Matter, one unlike thing with another unlike, and in the mixing the Soul has come to feel with Matter, and has been fettered and, as it were, snared in a sort of trap.

Итак не могло быть для нее более зла, но все было добрым, и она взяла некоторую часть от света, Он послал ее как наживку и приманку для материи - силу добра, еще не ощутимый свет, но эманацию Бога. Во-первых, Отец Величия вызвал Мать Света, и затем Мать Света призвала Первого Человека; затем Первый Человек вызвал своих пять сыновей, как человек, который одевает оружие на войну. И когда они это съели, разум пяти ясных богов был взят от них, и они стали как человек, которого укусила бешеная собака или змея, из-за яда детей тьмы.

Вот так душа перемешалась с материей, одна вещь с другой, полностью на нее непохожей, и в этом смешении душа начала чувствовать материю, и была закована, и как будто бы поймана в ловушку.

Chapter 4. The Rescue of the Soul

Then the First Man was cruelly afflicted down there by the Darkness. When the First Man came to his senses, he put up seven times a prayer to the Father of Greatness, and the Father heard when he prayed. God therefore pitied him and called for the Second Evocation, the Friend of Lights; and the Friend of Lights evoked the Great Builder; and the Great Builder called forth the Living Spirit – another Power emanated from Himself.

Then the Living Spirit called his five Sons: the Holder of Splendor from his Intelligence, the Great King of Honor from his Knowledge, the Diamond of Light from his Reason, the King of Glory from his Thought, and the Supporter from his Deliberation; these came to the Region of Darkness and found the First Man absorbed by the Darkness, he and his Sons.

Thereupon the Living Spirit called with a loud voice, and the Living Spirit’s voice resembled a sharp sword swift as the lightning; and it became another God and revealed the form of the First Man. Then it said to him: “Peace to you, O good one among the wicked, light amidst the darkness, god dwelling among wild beasts who know not their honor!” Then the First Man answered him, saying, “Come in peace, bringing the merchandise of calm and peace!” He also said to him, “How are our Fathers, the Sons of Light, faring in their City?” The Caller said to him, “They are prospering”; and coming down he gave him a right hand and led him up out of the Darkness.

Then the Caller and the Answerer united and went up towards the Mother of Life and the Living Spirit; and the Living Spirit put on the Caller, while the Mother of Life put on the Answerer, her beloved Son; and they went down to the Earth of Darkness, to the place of the First Man and his Sons.

Затем Первый Человек был жестоко заражен там внизу тьмой. Когда Первый Человек пришел в чувство, он семь раз молился Отцу Величия, и Отец услышал его молитвы. Поэтому Бог пожалел его и вызвал Второго Посланника, Друга Света; и Друг Света вызвал Великого Строителя; и Великий Строитель вызвал Живого Духа - другую силу, которая произошла от Бога.
